The equations utilize the differences in circumference to estimate overall volume and body density. Because fat deposits differ based on sex (men store more visceral fat in the abdomen, while women store more subcutaneous fat in the hips and thighs), the equations are customized for each sex.
The BMI-Based Method (Deurenberg Formula)

Circumference measurements are generally more accurate for individuals with athletic or muscular build. Because muscle tissue is dense, an athlete's BMI will indicate a higher body fat percentage than the Navy method, which accounts for the actual size of the waist. In contrast, visceral fat deposition will show up quickly in waist circumference, meaning the Navy method detects metabolic changes faster.
Hydration and Measurement Variance in Body Fat Metrics
Calculating your body fat percentage using circumference measurements is highly convenient, but it is subject to minor environmental variables. One of the largest variables is fluid retention and hydration levels. When you retain water (whether due to salt intake, muscular repair, or hormonal cycles), your waist and hip measurements can temporarily expand. To maintain high accuracy, take your measurements at the same time of day under consistent conditions. The recommended protocol is to measure in the morning, immediately after waking up and using the restroom, and before consuming any food or liquids.
When taking tape measurements, make sure the measuring tape is pulled snug against your skin but not tight enough to indent the tissue. Use a high-quality, non-stretch fiberglass tape rather than a fabric tape, as fabric can stretch over time and lead to inaccurate measurements.
Essential Fat vs. Storage Fat Categories
